Well I recently flew Southwest airlines and you had to show id that your ticket was in your name. I would check with the individual airlines you are planning to use and ask them if the id can be expired. better safe than sorry these days...I mean you can't even take a full size tube of toothpaste in your carry-on, they could very easily turn you down for that too.

You can fly domestically without a photo i.d., so yes you can travel with an expired drivers license. Most times TSA will not check the expiration date but should they be diligent you should be prepared for additional screening.
