Welcome to the world of e-ticket, i.e. electronic ticket. You can take e-ticket on a computer and get the printout of the same & you will also have to produce an ID proof with the e-ticket. Whereas in the case of i-ticket, i.e. internet ticket, it will be delivered to your address after the ticket has been booked by you on the computer using internet & you don't have to produce any ID with it. However, i-ticket can be booked not later than three days before the date of journey, whereas e-ticket can be booked on the same day till a certain point of time. Moreover, i-ticket will include a charge for the home delivery, where as you can simply take a printout of the e-ticket once generated. If lost and you do not remember the PNR, a duplicate i-ticket will attract charges, where as a copy of the e-ticket comes to your email id and you can take a copy any time.

One who books ticket online well before time can opt for i-ticket where he/she doesn't have to take a print out. So if you don't have a printer and are booking in at-least 5 days before travel date, then you can opt of i-ticket. And e-ticket is convenient if you are booking 2-3 days before travel date as i-ticket takes 2-3 days to reach by courier. Further in i-ticket you may not have to show ID proof during the journey. But ID proof is a must when you book e-ticket.

E-ticket & I-tickets both can be booked on Indian Railway website. I-ticket facility is for those consumers who have no printer so IRCTC delivers tickets on their postal address within stipulated period. Secondly there is no necessity of ID proof for I-tickets. On the other hand E-tickets generate instantly and can be printed simultaneously. The facility of I-tickets is available only in selected cities.

As you said, procedures for booking e-ticket or i-ticket are same. For i-ticket, ID proof is not required during the journey whereas it is a must for e-ticket. But the facility of i-tickets are only available in selected cities and for those who are not having printing facility or does not have any Valid ID proof.
