The last answer is the most truthful. For an idea of what it's like to visit North Korea I suggest the two documentaries by Vice (HBO show).

It IS possible to go to North Korea. In fact, their official website says so. Just go to http://www.korea-dpr.com/ and click on tourism.

You will be shown a very manipulated version of Pyongyang. If you are looking for a more authentic trip, looks into humanitarian aide that does work there. This route is much harder to go, though. Going through China is your best bet, the DMZ makes it impossible to go through South Korea.

Good luck, I want to go there too someday. ;)

You could try this site:

As long as you stay to the itinerary and not raise political issues, you should be fine and should enjoy it. It is a communist state under a strong leader, so expect it to be different.

Unless you have a death wish or are a business person stay the heck out. There is nothing there for the normal tourist so save your money and frustration.

Go to tripadvisor, where you'll find detailed feedback on all travel agencies that offer tours to North Korea. ... I went there with Koryo Tours and have been very satisfied with them.

The least expensive way is to join a guided tour, and in our group, there were about 15 people, plus a Western guide, three North Korean guides, the North Korean camera man (we could buy the movie he made ... but I guess we weren't the only ones to get this video), and the bus driver.

You have to stay with the group at all times.

If you don't want to travel with a group, you can go "on your own", but you'll still have two North Korean guides and a driver with you. And the itinerary has to be planned in advance, even if it's just you.

Don't worry about the guides. Of course they have a different world view from your own, but otherwise, they are very nice and I feld comfortable around them.

North Korea is a communist country. I don't think any travel agencies would arrange or allow to come and visit. Do you mean South Korean ?

Yes, Kim jong-il is the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The North Korean government makes it very difficult for foreigners to enter the country and strictly monitors their activities when they do. North Korea consistently violates human rights. If anyone criticize the government will get arrested and send to re-education camp. If you know anything about the communist, you certainly don't want to go there. I'm not sure you're even allowed to enter the country. Not to mention north Korea also possess nuclear weapons.
