I am looking to buy a plane ticket to fly from SJC to PHX and want to go during the first or second week of September but day does not matter nor does time. So when would be the best time?

There are no cheap days to fly. The sooner you buy your ticket the better dont forget your ticket has been available to travel agents up to 9 months before a flight departs. Its probably best to expect the lowest fares to have sold out already.
