If you're trying with Continental, you can access your American Express account online (register online if you haven't already) then browse the rewards points catalog (it will tell you how many points you have on the main page) You can convert your AMEX rewards points into miles. I don't know where you're flying to New York from, but it might cost you around 50,000 AMEX points if I had to guess. Go into your account and find out for sure.

It could fall around 20-25k points roundtrip. Aside from the website, you can also try calling the rewards department (800 297 3276) to make sure.
The Blue Sky rewards program requires a minimum of 7500 points available to get a refund of $100 towards that ticket. A $500 ticket? You'd need 37,500 points to have the ticket refunded in full.
